Filmmakers Target Elephant Poachers To Defend Species

Ivory Rising Puts Spotlight On Elephant Poachers, Wildlife Traffickers

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s Vulcan Prods. is teaming with with Red Bull’s Terra Mater Film Studios to produce a feature documentary about elephant poaching called, Ivory Rising.

Not much can be revealed about the doc, mainly because the pic’s filmmakers cannot be named for their own safety. They are currently filming undercover with the support of government agencies and NGOs across Africa to capture new evidence about the horrific ivory trade. The film’s message is to raise awareness of the trade, its connections to terrorism, and its very real threat of extinction to the African elephant.

“We have seen early footage from the undercover operations, and we know that we have a ground-breaking film in the making.” said Walter Köhler, CEO of Terra Mater, who will start international sales for the film at the Cannes Film Market.

The documentary is the first collaboration between the two production companies, which are both committed to “making social and environmentally conscious films that drive real, measurable change.”

“The filmmakers have achieved unprecedented access to stories that track the ivory trade,” said Carole Tomko, Vulcan’s general manager and creative director of productions. “Driving awareness and disrupting ivory poaching operations in Africa is critical to both Vulcan and Terra Mater. We are truly honored to work with Terra Mater, and with the brave filmmakers in the field who are risking their own safety to change the poaching game on the ground in order to protect these beautiful creatures.”

Ivory Rising will be the latest addition to the recent list of documentaries, including the recent Gardeners of Eden, which highlight Africa’s horrific poaching and illegal ivory trade.

Köhler added, “It is our absolute intention to see the trade in ivory banned, and the elephant saved from extinction.”
